UPDATE: We’ve got some great news for Mac folks! We’re going to have Mac versions of all* of the Anniversary Collection! We’ve teamed up with some really amazing people at Codeweavers who specialize in this sort of thing (and are also Myst fans), and they’ve been able to make macOS versions of all the games* from the Windows versions — no additional emulation software is required.

Myst Online 1.0 for Mac is free to download from our software library. This free software for Mac OS X is a product of Cyan Worlds Inc. The most popular version of the program is 1.0. Myst Online for Mac belongs to Games. This program's bundle is identified as com.TransGaming.UruLauncher. Myst (aka ミスト), a really nice adventure game sold in 1995 for Windows, is available and ready to be played again! Myst will of course also have a major graphical update. As you can see in the screenshot, it promises to look fantastically detailed. It's unsure when this great looking version of the classic CD-ROM game is released, but you might as well check if you can download and play it! To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Myst, Cyan is offering a never-been-done-before, historical anthology of the complete series. With this bundle, you get all 7 Myst games together for the first time and updated to run on macOS 10.13 and Windows 10 operating systems. After the Kickstarter ends, each Backer will fill out a survey where (among other things) they can choose either Windows or macOS. (No need to do anything until you receive the survey - and no ETA on when the survey is coming.)

* There are caveats, so keep reading…

First Caveat: Myst: Masterpiece Edition is giving us trouble. We’re working on it, but we’re not sure about it. Soooo… we’ll be converting the original Myst to fill that hole.

Second Caveat: Flux. Any of this could change - for the better or for the worse. Because there is testing going on right now, we want you to be aware that there is a little room for some wiggle, but we’re obviously feeling very secure about the Mac versions.

Apple has always been a part of Cyan’s history. And Apple/Mac users are a very important part of the audience for our games. As we’ve said before, Rand only uses a Mac at home and work. However, these facts do not directly correlate to resources for Mac updates. Those updates require substantial time and effort to update or rebuild the games from the ground up.

Changes and updates to Apple's hardware (example: migration from PowerPC to Intel), software (example: discontinuation of HyperCard), and the MacOS platform (example: switch to OS X) make the Mac a wonderful modern ecosystem, but can create sometimes overwhelming challenges to small developers trying to update older titles.

Last month it was reported that there are plans to relaunch the entire Myst collection on the PC. The good news for those who grew up playing the game is that this has since been confirmed, as a Kickstarter campaign for the Myst 25th Anniversary Collection has since been launched where players will be able to get their hands on the entire collection.

According to the developers, “To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the epic game that became your world, Cyan is offering a never-been-done-before, historical anthology of the complete series, along with some special, Atrus-approved, authentic game artifacts! The collection and artifacts will be packaged in a unique box – available only through this Kickstarter, with a limited run, for a limited time. (Seriously, the games will be available later, but the special packaging and artifacts will not be sold again!)”

So what does the collection include? This includes pretty much every Myst game that has been released to date, which includes Myst (1993), Riven: The Sequel to Myst (1997), RealMyst: Interactive 3D Edition (2000), Myst 3: Exile (2001), Uru: Ages Beyond Myst (2003), Myst 4: Revelation (2004), and Myst 5: End of Ages (2005).

However there is some bad news and that is if you game on a Mac, some of the titles released won’t be compatible with macOS. According to Cyan, “But for various reasons, maintaining some of those Mac titles now means rebuilding them from scratch – an option that, as a small indie studio, takes time or resources we just don’t have. This war of mine: stories - fathers promise (ep.1) crack. And for games that were produced by other studios, even that option may not be possible.” The company will work towards creating more Mac compatible titles, but until then Mac gamers will be out of luck.
