LUGALBANDA IN THE MOUNTAIN CAVE

Sumerian literarytradition states that Lugalbanda in his own right was a god-king of the city ofUruk. He is generally held to be Gilgamesh´s father, and according to theSumerian Kings List ruled the city for no fewer than 1200 years. At the time ofthis adventure, nevertheless, he seems to have been a young officer inEnmerkar´s army commanding a division of Uruk´s troops. Again in this myth, wehave Aratta as the city rival to Uruk, and a bizarre adventure that took placeon the road from Uruk to Aratta.

The story tells us thathalfway along the mountain road to Aratta, Lugalbanda was stricken with astrange overpowering fever that baffled his companions. The best they could doas his teeth chattered in the cold was to find him a dry cave to shelter in.

There Lugalbanda laydeeply unconscious for so long that his companions feared that he might passaway while they went in search for help. So they prepared the crude cave as iffor a funeral, laying out food and drink in the traditional Sumerian manner andplacing Lugalbanda´s weapons beside him. If he lived, so much the better: hewould have sustenance to give him strength. If he died, he would do so withdignity among the funerary goods and his companions would retrieve his body ontheir return from the campaign. With tears and lamentations, they left him tohis fate.

But Lugalbanda did notdie. After days laying unconscious in a coma he awoke. He was still feverish,and his barren surroundings appalled him. Brought up in the rich cities ofMesopotamia, the hostile mountains seemed to him a place of horror, so heprayed to the Sun god Utu and his twin sister, Inanna, the Great Goddess ofLove and War:' In the mountain cave, the most dreadful spot upon theEarth, let me be ill no longer! May my limbs do no perish in themountains!'

Like the dispersed holy cows of Nanna, as with a breeding bull when, in his old age, they haveleft him behind in the cattle pen, his brothers and friends abandoned holy Lugalbanda in the mountain cave; and with repeated tears andmoaning, with tears, with lamentation, with grief and weeping, Lugalbanda'solder brothers set off into the mountains.

Then two days passed during which Lugalbanda was ill; to these two days, half a day was added. AsUtu turned his glance towards his home, as the animalslifted their heads toward their lairs, at the day's end in the evening cool,his body was as if anointed with oil. But he was not yet free of his sickness.

When he lifted his eyes to heaven to Utu, he wept to him as if to his own father. In the mountaincave he raised to him his fair hands:

'Utu, I greetyou! Let me be ill no longer! Hero, Ningal's son, I greetyou! Let me be ill no longer! Utu, you have let me comeup into the mountains in the company of my brothers. In the mountain cave, themost dreadful spot on earth, let me be ill no longer! Here where there is nomother, there is no father, there is no acquaintance, no one whom I value, mymother is not here to say 'Alas, my child!' My brother is not here tosay 'Alas, my brother!' My mother's neighbour who enters our house isnot here to weep over me. If the male and female protective deities werestanding by, the deity of neighbourliness would say, 'A man should notperish'. A lost dog is bad; a lost man is terrible. On the unknown way atthe edge of the mountains, Utu, is a lost man, a man inan even more terrible situation. Don't make me flow away like water in aviolent death! Don't make me eat saltpetre as if it were barley! Don't make mefall like a throwstick somewhere in the desert unknown to me! Afflicted with aname which excites my brothers' scorn, let me be ill no longer! Afflicted withthe derision of my comrades, let me be ill no longer! Utu accepted his tears. He sent down his divine encouragement tohim in the mountain cave.

Inthe mountain cave he raised to her his fair hands:

Inana accepted his tears. With power of life she let him go tosleep just like the sleeping Utu. Inanaenveloped him with heart's joy as if with a woollen garment. Then, just as if..., she went to brick-built Kulaba.

The bull that eats up the black soup, theastral holy bull-calf (i.e. the moon), came towatch over him. He shines (?) in the heavens like the morning star, he spreadsbright light in the night. Suen, who is greeted as thenew moon, father Nanna, gives the direction for therising Utu. The glorious lord whom the crown befits, Suen, the beloved son of Enlil, the god (1 ms. has instead: the lord) reached the zenith splendidly. His brilliance likeholy Cara (1ms. has instead:Utu) (1 ms. has instead: like lapis lazuli), his starry radiance illuminated for himthe mountain cave. When Lugalbanda raised his eyes toheaven to Suen, he wept to him as if to his own father.In the mountain cave he raised to him his fair hands:

'King whom one cannot reach in thedistant sky! Suen, whom one cannot reach in the distantsky! King who loves justice, who hates evil! Suen, wholoves justice, who hates evil! Justice brings joy justly to your heart. Apoplar, a great staff, forms a sceptre for you, you who loosen the bonds ofjustice, who do not loosen the bonds of evil. If you encounter evil before you,it is dragged away behind .... When your heart becomes angry, you spit yourvenom at evil like a snake which drools poison.'

Suen accepted his tears and gave him life. He conferred on hisfeet the power to stand.

A second time (i.e. at the following sunrise),as the bright bull rising up from the horizon, the bull resting among thecypresses, a shield standing on the ground, watched by the assembly, a shieldcoming out from the treasury, watched by the young men -- the youth Utu extended his holy, shining rays down from heaven (1 ms. from Ur adds: ... holy, his brilliance illuminated for him the mountain cave),he bestowed them on holy Lugalbanda in the mountain cave.His good protective god hovered ahead of him, his good protective goddesswalked behind him. 'King of the Hill' is the twenty-third episode in the ninth season of the American animated television series The Simpsons. It originally aired on the Fox network in the United States on May 3, 1998.^[2] It was written by John Swartzwelder and directed by Steven Dean Moore, and guest starsBrendan Fraser and Steven Weber.^[2] The episode sees Homer trying to climb a large mountain to impress Bart after he humiliates him at a church picnic with his lack of fitness.

Plot[edit]

After his obesity embarrasses Bart at a church picnic, Homer attempts to lose weight, and begins going on midnight jogs around town. He soon discovers Power Sauce, an energy bar made out of apples which he starts to eat regularly.

At a gym, Homer meets Rainier Wolfcastle who becomes his fitness coach. In two months, Homer is healthier, more muscular, and reveals what he has been doing to his family. At the gym, two Power Sauce representatives ask Rainier to climb to the top of Springfield's tallest mountain, 'The Murderhorn', as a publicity stunt. When he refuses, Bart insists Homer do it.

Despite Grampa telling him about how he was betrayed by a friend, C. W. McAllister, during their climb on the Murderhorn, Homer accepts and is aided by two Sherpas, but fires them after waking up one night to find them secretly dragging him up. Once the Power Sauce representatives get wind of the situation, they unsuccessfully attempt to warn Homer not to continue with the dangerous stunt, revealing that the bar is actually made up of apple cores and Chinese newspapers.

The mountain proves too treacherous and high for Homer, who takes shelter in a cave. In it, he finds McAllister's frozen body and evidence proving it was Grampa who betrayed him. Too tired and ashamed to continue, Homer sticks his flag pole on the ledge, ripping off the Power Sauce flag and tying his own make-shift white flag to the pole. The ensuing crack collapses the rest of the mountain, making where he is on now the peak. Proud, he uses McAllister's body to sled down, where he is greeted by the crowd. When he goes to show the family, they find out that the flag has disappeared from the pole. Nevetheless, Bart is proud of his father for making it to the top of the mountain.^[2][3]

Production[edit]

The episode was pitched and written by John Swartzwelder. The writing staff had to find a new angle for Homer's weight problems, as the idea had been used several times before. This was emphasized in this episode when Marge does not seem to care that Homer is going to try to lose weight again.^[4]

In the scenes where the Sherpas were speaking, the show staff went to great lengths to find translations. Originally, the producers of the film adaption of the book Into Thin Air were contacted to help. The film producers were shocked at the trouble the Simpsons staff were going to, and replied that they had simply made up translations in the film. The staff then had to consult various experts by telephone.^[4]

The idea of the upper part of the mountain collapsing so Homer would be at the peak came from Mike Scully's brother Brian, after the staff 'desperately needed a way out'.^[4]

Cultural references[edit]

The mountain Homer must climb, the Murderhorn, is a reference to the mountain Matterhorn, which is located in the Swiss Alps.^[1] The name of the episode is a reference to the Fox series King of The Hill.

In its original broadcast, 'King of the Hill' finished 23rd in ratings for the week of April 27–May 4, 1998, with a Nielsen rating of 9.4, equivalent to approximately 9.2 million viewing households. It was the fourth highest-rated show on the Fox network that week, following The X-Files, King of the Hill, and Ally McBeal.^[5]

The authors of the book I Can't Believe It's a Bigger and Better Updated Unofficial Simpsons Guide, Warren Martyn and Adrian Wood, thought well of the episode, stating: 'A quite charming little adventure in which, in an effort to impress Bart, Homer undertakes a dangerous adventure and comes through successfully. It's nice because just for once, to all intents and purposes, Homer actually succeeds in something.'^[1]
