The Chess Variants Club Crack
At an evening in December 1996, celebrating the 50th anniversary ofthe Bennekomse Schaak Vereniging (the chess club of Bennekom, avillage in the Netherlands; I was a member of this chess club for manyyears), several chess variants were played. One of these variants (andone traditional chess players were bewildered of most) was Rifle Chess.
Rifle Chess, also called Shoot chess, or Shooting chess, was, according to Pritchard's Encyclopediaof Chess Variants, invented in 1921 by W. B. Seabrook, who was inspiredby modern warfare tactics, where, unless in ancient warfare, where a closecombat was necessary to kill an enemy, now the striker can kill at a distance. The game has been played since then at many occasions.
Rules
The rules of orthodox chess are followed, withthe following exceptions.
Pieces no longer take by moving to the square that is occupied by thepiece they want to take. Instead, when taking, the piece that takes doesnot change location. Effectively, this means that when one could take apiece under the traditional chess rules, one can remove the opponents piecebut no of ones pieces is moved. One can always take at most one piece perturn.

This simple rule change changes the game a lot. For instance, it isof no use to guard pieces.

Plunderches is a commercial chess variant, first marketed in 2004. The publisher of the game sent me a review copy; here youcan see some pictures of the set, some information on it, and an opinion.A Plunderchess set contains a set of pieces, and a set of vests. The pieces, while looking almoststandard chess pieces, are shaped such that they can have these vests put over them. Invisible, inc. for mac. There are differenttypes of vests: queen vests, rook vests, etc, and a last move vest. The king vests are only used in variants; thelast move vest is not used for the variant, but can be used to take up a position after play and remember whichplayer and which piece moved last.
I don't like chess variants like 960 or King of the Hill etc because the way I see it I have my hands full with regular chess and I need to concentrate on that. I tried to like bullet chess but came to realize I can't stand it because I don't have enough time to think about my moves.
These chess variants are derived from chess by changing the board, board setup, pieces, or rules. Many variants employ standard chess rules and mechanics, but vary the starting position of the pieces or number of pieces. Advanced chess is a form of chess in which each human player uses a computer chess program to explore the possible results of candidate moves. Despite this computer assistance, it is the human player who controls and decides the game. Also called cyborg chess or centaur chess, they were introduced for the first time by grandmaster Garry Kasparov, with the aim of bringing together human.
A set contains all regular chess pieces, and one additional king and one additional queen per color. There is no chess boardin the set; players should use a normal chess board for that. The set contains a booklet with the rules and a short booklet of the UCSF (United States Chess Federation) with the rules of chess and information on the UCCF. The sethas two vests for rooks, knights, bishops, queens, and kings, and five vests for paws, and the last move vest. The vestsare on a kind of metal bar, which allows for easy storage and use.
The pictures show the set, with pieces with, and without vests.
Sketch of rules
The main idea of the game is the following: when a piece takes another piece, then it gains a vest of the type ofthat piece. For instance, when a white pawn takes a black rook, the pawn gets a rook vest. Also, when a piece takes a piecewith a vest, it can choose to take the vest from the taken piece. There are some details in the rules I'm skippinghere; e.g., a piece may have only one vest at the time.A vest gives the right to move one time as the piece taken. So, the pawn with the rook vest can make one move like a rook. When doing so, the vest is used up, and removed from play.Review
I played several games of Plunderchess with two of my children (Wim, 13 years, who playes at the older youthgroup of the local chess club, and Annefleur, who played two years in the chess club, but now only plays withfriends.) Each of us enjoyed the game a lot. The rules of Plunderchess are easy to learn, (assuming youknow the rules of chess.)There are several chess variants that depart a lot from chess, and give the player the feeling that he is playinga different type of game. Plunderchess is not such a variant. The game has a real chess-feeling, but with a smalltwist. The opening needs a different strategy: one does not want to start a 'fair' exchange of pieces, as only the lastpiece that takes in a series has a vest at the end. (E.g., if a white bishop takes a black bishop, and then a black pawntakes the white bishop back, then the black pawn gets a bishop vest: definitively an advantage for black; where instandard chess this exchange would be even.) In the middle game and endgame, also interesting things can happen.I found out in the hard way how strong a rook with knight move can be. Even while one can use the vest only once, itis continuously a threat; and it also gives check to ones king.
Thus my verdict, no, our verdict: Plunderchess is a very enjoyable chess variant, liked by people that alsolike chess, brought to us in an attractive and well made set. Well recommended!
